Vertical Smoke Curtains
Description:
A smoke curtain is a device that controls the movement of smoke during a fire by directing the smoke towards mechanical or natural ventilation points. Traditionally smoke curtains have been used as an integral part of a naturally ventilated building however smoke curtains are proving to be a cost effective solution in conjunction with mechanical ventilation.
The Coopers SmokeStop smoke curtain consists of a fire rated fabric that is wound on to a steel tube that is housed in a steel headbox. The bottom of the fabric has a weighted steel bar that is sufficiently heavy to deploy the curtain from its open state.
The smoke curtain remains retracted within the ceiling until activated to deploy. Optionally side guides can be incorporated in the design to minimise the potential for smoke mitigation. Normally this is kept to a minimum by allowing small edge gaps for large size curtains (e.g. 20mm edge gap for a curtain that is 15m long x 2m high; the total 0.08m² gap is small compared with the 30m² opening).
