Maintenance
The inspection, test, preventative maintenance and survey requirements for maintaining fire protections systems is outlined in the Australian Standard AS1851(2005).
Smoke Curtains
AS1851 provides for maintaining smoke curtain within Section 18.4.1.8 which requires inspection and maintenance checks at six-monthly, yearly and five-yearly intervals.
Most fire engineers will refer to manufacturer’s recommendations as the requirements for maintaining the smoke curtains within their report. You can download a copy of our recommendations here.
Fire Curtains
The requirements for maintaining fire curtains are not specifically called up within AS1851. Appendix E (informative) mentions fire curtains and refers to AS1851 Section 18 which holds the requirements for maintaining smoke curtains. This is a good reference to cover the gravity fail safe requirements for fire curtains.
Due to the similarities in construction and field of application of fire curtains and fire shutters the maintenance requirements for fire shutters, which is within Section 17.4.5 of AS1851, is usually referred to for fire curtains. The frequency of inspection, maintenance for fire shutters is three-monthly, six-monthly and yearly.
Australian design standards for fire curtains do not exist. Currently the best operational and design standards for fire curtains are to refer to EN12101.1(2005) or PAS121(2007). Within PAS121 released by (BSi) the maintenance requirements for fire curtains is daily visual inspections of the area and monthly operational testing/maintenance.
